January 2021 (online): Hydropolitics – Dr. Haroon Sheick

Dear alumni, We wish you a happy new year and all the best for 2021.

With COVID-19 continuing to make our usual physical events impossible, our Society would like to invite you to an engaging online discussion, led by Dr. Haroon Sheikh, on the topic of hydropolitics.

An Oxford University alumnus, Dr. Sheikh is a senior research fellow at the Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR) and a philosopher at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

His recent book, Hydropolitics, analyses the dynamics of the world’s seas.  He describes the relationship between land and sea powers and between water and trade, as well as the innovative character of sea powers. He pays special attention to the role of the Netherlands and to the changing relationship between the US, a traditional maritime power par excellence, and China, traditionally a land force.

This talk will be free, but participants are encouraged to make a donation of their choice to Vluchtelingenwerk, a Dutch refugee charity.

With best wishes, The Committee
