Join us as the Society takes a walk hundred years back in time along the cobbled streets of the Zuiderzee village in Enkhuizen. The Open Air Zuiderzeemuseum at Enkhuizen is a reconstructed small village from the 19th century. See, hear, feel, taste and smell everyday life round the Zuiderzee as it was before the Afsluitdijk (the great IJsselmeer Barrier Dam) turned the former inland sea into what we now know as the IJsselmeer, in 1932. The houses are original, transported to the museum from all around the Zuiderzee (now the IJsselmeer and Markermeer). The museum is always alive with re-enactments of traditional trade and crafts, including a working blacksmith and we will take a guided tour around the Open Air Museum.
The guided tour will be followed by a walking tour of Enkhuizen a Golden Age Dutch town on the coast of IJsselmeer. This will be led by Society Member Dan. The town is full of beautiful buildings, from the famous Drommedaris and Zuiderkerk to a multitude of historic private houses. Enkhuizen retains her moat and raised fortifications, offering visitors an enjoyable way to see the town. The various harbours of Enkhuizen are full with all kinds of sailing boats. Modern Enkhuizen is a leading international centre for seed research.
